Description

Optical communication systems form the backbone of today’s communication and information society. Notwithstanding the enormous capacities carried by the various types of fiber-optic networks, the scaling of those capacities is severely lagging the traffic demand, which has led to a “capacity crunch” in optical fiber systems, which has been in the spotlight of all major optical-communications-related conferences in the past decade. This Special Issue will shed light on the fiber-optic network scalability problems and various solution paths that are currently being discussed within the scientific community and within the fiber-optics industry as a whole. This issue consequently discusses various aspects of fiber-optic network capacity scalability limits and solutions, including ultra-broadband systems, spatially multiplexed systems as well as scalability on a networking level, and also reviews other important aspects of evolving fiber-optic networks in terms of security and environmental sensing.
