Sarah Spurgeon is Professor of Control Engineering in the UCL Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering where she recently completed an eight year term as Head of Department. She received her B.Sc. and D.Phil. degrees from the University of York, York, U.K., in 1985 and 1988, respectively and has held previous academic positions at the University of Loughborough, the University of Leicester and the University of Kent in the UK. She has previously served as Head of the Department of Engineering at both the University of Leicester and University of Kent.

Sarah’s research interests are in the area of systems modelling and analysis, robust control and estimation in which areas she has published over 300 research papers. She was awarded the Honeywell International Medal for ‘distinguished contribution as a control and measurement technologist to developing the theory of control’ in 2010 and an IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000. She was awarded an OBE in 2015 and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK.
Within IEEE she is currently a Member of the Board of the IEEE Foundation. She has served IEEE for more than thirty years with diverse roles across the IEEE UK and Ireland Section, within her home society (Control Systems Society) and within the IEEE Awards programme. Most recently she served as Editor in Chief of IEEE Press (2022-2025).

She is currently Vice President Publications for the International Federation of Automatic Control.
