Hussein is a full professor with the School of Systems and Computing, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Canberra, served as the Deputy Head (People) (2021&22) School of Engineering & IT and the Executive Director (2006-2010) of the UNSW Defence and Security Applications Research Centre. Hussein was the National President (2016-2019) for the Australian Society for Operations Research, a member (2013-2015) of the Australian Research Council College of Experts and has been the Chair of the Corporate Governance Board for Opulence Institute of Higher Education since 2024.
Hussein is a Fellow of IEEE, Australian Computer Society, UK Operational Research Society, and Australian Institute of Managers and Leaders. He is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Hussein is a Distinguished Lecturer (2022-2024) for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE-CIS), Founding Editor-in-Chief (2020-2024) of the IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, Chair (2024-2025) of the IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award Committee, vice-chair of the IEEE Standard 7018 for Security and Trustworthiness Requirements in Generative Pretrained Artificial Intelligence (AI) Models, and member of the strategic planning committee for IEEE PSPB.
Prof Abbass served as (2021-2023) the IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence’s Steering Committee Chair, Vice-President for Technical Activities (2016-2019) and ExCom and AdCom member (2016-2019) of IEEE-CIS. He founded the IEEE CIS Australian Capital Territory chapter (2015), and Chaired IEEE CIS Emerging Technologies Technical Committee (2013-2014). Hussein’s research focuses on trusted quantum-enabled human-AI-swarm teaming systems, trusted testing of autonomous systems, and responsible decentralized machine learning and machine education systems and algorithms.
