IEEEClimate

IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, is launching a new publication, IEEE Climate, which will further the IEEE mission and vision by exploring the intersection of technology and climate change, specifically focusing on how IEEE technology can play a vital role in mitigating and adapting to climate challenges. The magazine will serve as a platform for researchers, engineers, practitioners, and policymakers to share their knowledge, insights, and innovative solutions in addressing climate change through the application of IEEE technology.

The editorial mission of IEEE Climate is to provide an IEEE-wide, multidisciplinary, all-electronic archival magazine that publishes several types of content related to any aspect of climate science: original content of general interest, including articles on policy related to, the social implications of, and the economic impact of technology related to climate change, expert insights from field leaders on topics of significant interest, and cutting-edge technical articles describing original research.

The IEEE Publication Services & Products Board Nominations & Appointments Committee is accepting nominations for the position of editor-in-chief (EIC), IEEE Climate. Nominations should be submitted via Open Water and must include:

  • Information about the candidate, including a photograph, and any IEEE affiliations
  • Candidate’s biography
  • Description of the candidate’s IEEE-related activities
  • Information about the candidate’s qualifications/publication-related experience
  • Candidate’s major accomplishments
  • Position statement, describing the candidate’s vision for the magazine

Nominations must be received no later than 15 August 2025.

The EIC will serve a term of three years, with the possibility of reappointment to one additional three-year term.

Candidates must be an IEEE member in good standing, should be familiar with IEEE publications, and must possess a broad understanding of the field across academia, industry, and government. Candidates must also be able to attract and develop a diverse team of talented and respected individuals to serve key editorial board roles. Demonstrated managerial skills are also required, as they are necessary to ensure rich content and issue development, along with timely processing of submissions through the editorial cycle.

The editorial practices of IEEE Climate will be consistent with standards set by IEEE publishing policy, with an added emphasis on providing authors of research articles with the rapid review process found in successful journals. In addition to an EIC, IEEE Climate will have an editorial board (chaired by the EIC) made up of individuals with expertise in the different areas covered by the magazine, as well as a professional managing editor.

Specific responsibilities of the EIC include:

  • Overseeing the entire editorial process, ensuring the quality and integrity of the content, and shaping the overall direction of IEEE Climate
  • Actively soliciting high-quality submissions from field leaders on topics of interest
  • Establishing a review process that minimizes bias and subjects all articles of a given type to equivalent and unprejudiced reviews, resolving conflicts or problems as necessary
  • Identifying and appointing a diverse pool of qualified and engaged editors who are responsible for managing the peer review process established by the EIC
  • As the highest authority on all editorial matters, ensuring that all content fits within the approved scope of the publication and taking responsibility for acceptance or rejection of all submissions
